On Friday February 7th DES Student Council members Miles Martinez, Miguel Dixon, Tanya Salazar, Lukas Miller, and 4th grade representative Kacee Manwell attended Native American Sovereignty Day at the State Legislature.  Students had the opportunity to witness Tribal and State government in action as Native American voices from throughout the state presented issues before the New Mexico State Legislature.  Our students participated in many activities at the Roundhouse.  Most notable, were their visits with State Senator Benny Shendo and his staff to discuss education issues and monetary grants available for schools to add traditional foods and fresh fruit and vegetables to their cafeteria menus, viewing the House of Representative's discussion of  current bills before committee assignments, and meeting with Legislative Council members of the Jicarilla Apache Nation as well as Executive Branch members Vice President Garcia and President Notsinneh.
